In the tender darkness of early morning,

I rise from bed

looking for Self

looking for water

looking for light to guide me

without disturbing

the peaceful stillness

that surrounds me.

Seeking answers,

it’s the Question

that finds me.

If I died today,

have I left behind

enough love children,

enough lovers,

enough poems,

and enough good acts

to satisfy my soul?

Perhaps not,

but I have been a bold light

shining out as the shadows cloistered,

I have carried dimples in my fruited face

to inspire sunshine in my neighbors’ eyes,

I have danced with the Unknown

to buy another day of rainbows for the children,

and I have been

the beloved receiver

of your sunflowers and kisses.
