One night I dreamt I was a beautiful poet and revolutionary embroiled in a dead-end love affair and a doomed rebellion.

Dream Written in the Present Tense

My rebel lover isn’t going to leave her other commander lover for me. Our rebellion is disintegrating, and we are trapped in the bombed-out rubble of some tiny village trying to figure out a way out of this mess. All my life force and efforts have been invested into this rebellion and love story, and it’s all being blasted to bits like the surrounding ruins.

Pointless. Wasted. Failure.

I look to my left and see a gap in a wall that has been partially destroyed.

The gap is a crack into the Universe.

I turn away from the rubble of my love story rebellion. I walk away from my old dreams and failures to gaze upon the Universe. I can see galaxies and star nebulae spread out before me. Despite my failures, I know I love my life.

However, the call of the Universe is so powerful.
I do not want to return to the ruins of the past and cobble together another existence made of the same old tired story. I want the freedom of the Universe.

Having no idea what will happen and accepting that it might lead to my death, I go to the crack in the wall and jump.

I am suspended in space for quite a while.
I have time to marvel at the infinite beauty of the Universe which is full of colored lights and love.
I have time to wonder how it will feel for my body to die.
I have time to realize how much I love my body.
I adore my body.
Will dying hurt very badly?
What is on the other side of my body’s death?

As I say goodbye to the only body I can remember having, I plunge into ice water.
This is not what I expected.

I come up sputtering and flailing my limbs in pure shock.

A hand reaches out to me, and I grasp it.
The hand is attached to an arm that pulls me out of the water in one smooth movement.
The arm is attached to a powerful body that throws a warm cape around me, and gives me a strong boisterous hug.
The body belongs to an old friend who belongs to another life and another world I have somehow forgotten completely.

“Sorry about that dramatic exit call, but I had to get you out of that shitty situation. You were really starting to believe it was you,” says this incredible daredevil being with an air of irrepressible mirth.

My friend is so alive with bold eyes and a rakish grin that radiates adventure and an alert, active mind. In his eyes, I remember myself.

I am a lover and a star dancer able to traverse the multi-verse in an instant with a snap of two fingers.
My forms are infinite.
I bring light, and when I leave, those whom I love remember themselves and remember their own lights shining inside of them.

Thank you, my intrepid friend, for remembering me when I forget myself.
I will return the favor throughout all worlds and throughout all times.
